Out of the blue my knee started to feel weak. At first I ignored it, but over time my knee has continued to hurt at different times. Some days it is easy to run, sprint, and cut. But lately it has proved difficult for me to even walk up and down steps comfortably. What can I do? (Coach Smith please answer this)

I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TeeVee, but maybe we can do a little shade-tree diagnostic work. I would surmise it's nothing more than some tendonitis manifest from increased mileage. Tendons connect bone to muscle and they will grow to meet the demand placed on them. That's why the stimulus response of training works in the first place. The stretching and stress placed on the tendon causes it to become inflamed. Rest, Ice, Ibuprofene (for anti-inflammatory reasons - and yes, go by the recommended dosage which is surprisingly high but only truly effective if used as the manufacturer suggests), and possibly massage would more than likely be helpful.

Since you are having difficulty going up and down steps, I would guess patellar tendonitis. If it keeps bothering you after doing all of the above, you probably need to have it looked at. I would ice immediately after any activity and do so for a good while. You will have to take the AI every four or six hours also. This is pretty common and it just goes with the territory. If you are improving it seems like every runner fights this type of stuff off on a continual basis. Just let your body adapt. Did you increase anything more than just mileage, i.e. pace, hills, terrain?

Something else to examine would be shoes. Do you have new ones? How many miles are on the shoes you have? Are the shoes a fit for your running style and body type?
Hope this helps get you started on the road to recovery. It's pretty awful to be hurt. You will recover though.

Well my body type is one that I would consider a little top heavy. I'm apparently not a heavy guy, but I have also not been running as I could have up until early to mid June. There have been hills in some of my workouts not a ton and nothing too extreme. I'm sure it is something minor because it doesn't hurt every time I run just on certain days. I will give your advice a go and see where I stand in 5 to 7 days. I actually played basketball today and it did not hurt really so it is possible I am making improvement. Thanks again

Well, I hope some of that might help. At least, maybe it will give some options or perspective. I knew when you talked about "when you cut" that you were doing some other activities that probably contributed to the symptoms. If it's irritation from that it could be a host of other problems. Unless you've turned your knee, almost all other injuries running are overuse, whether they be increases in speed, duration, or terrain. Or, they are a shoe problem. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Coach forgot to tell you, but my knee got better a long time ago. Early August, but I cut back on running and started sprinting again. Thanks for your help
